new kilim rugs

Sort by:

Once considered the poor cousin to the knotted-pile carpet, the flat-weave Kilim Rug has, in recent times, grown in stature as the wider world market warmed to its’ charm, versatility, durability and affordability. Once the product of individual, home-based, tribal and nomadic handicraft with weavers using available materials, dyes and individual designs, contemporary Kilim production is now more centralised and organised. Commercial Workshops, Turkish Government Art Schools and individual home-based weavers in and around Anatolia are today producing new Kilims, often in softer colours, with more subtle designs and in more manageable dimensions to cater for the growing internal and export markets. All our new Kilims are constructed with 100% sheep wool, which is sometimes combined with cotton, and woven on hand-looms according to traditional techniques. New production methods and workplaces are helping to ensure the continuance of this highly-skilled and traditional craft into the next generations as the artisans who weave their magic now receive a regular income and no longer have to finance and source their own materials, work alone and have to wait until a piece is completed to receive recompense. In the words of the song “Everything old is new again!”
